Our client, Steve, came to the Sarana Health Restore program suffering from an enlarged prostate, chronic back pain, fatigue, and borderline high cholesterol. He has also been suffering from pain from bursitis in his left hip, which stops him from doing the things he loves. He says he gets so tired in the afternoon that he feels like he needs to stop working and needs to take a nap. Steve tries to “eat healthy” and do all of the right things. He had spent almost 10 years seeing different practitioners to get some relief for his back: chiropractors (one who actually made his pain significantly worse), acupuncturists, massage therapists, you name it. He never experienced more than 6 months of moderate relief before his pain returned, often worse than before.
Our Wellness Team looked at Bob through the lens of the foundations of health. It was determined that Steve may have possible food intolerances and/or dysbiosis (an imbalance of microorganisms that live in and on the human body) in his gut, which may be contributing to inflammation, which is at the root of many of his issues. We also wanted to evaluate his labs to see if we could get clues to his various symptoms. We discovered that he had a B12 deficiency. We also wanted to support his prostate health with dietary interventions to help prevent the progression of the disease and possibly reverse it. We added a variety of antioxidant-rich foods and fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce the risk of prostate cell growth. Additionally, we suggested incorporating various foods high in zinc to aid in wound healing and lower inflammation. He wasn’t drinking enough water to keep his body properly hydrated, so we recommended that he increase his water intake to half of his body weight in ounces to both reduce inflammation and create “buoyancy” between disks in the back, thus helping to reduce pain.
We suggested that he temporarily eliminate some of the most highly inflammatory foods and educated him about how to do that while preserving his favorite foods by providing creative, healthy substitutes when necessary. We made intentional, high-quality supplement recommendations to address his nutritional deficiencies that showed up in his lab work and based on the symptoms he shared. We recommended stretches to help with his back pain, and he has found them to be very helpful. He also feels good being an “active” participant in addressing his chronic pain, as he was a “passive” participant for many years.
We are still working with Steve, and thus far, he reports having significantly more energy, loves eating his nutritious breakfast, and reports that his hip pain is virtually gone. Additionally, he has lost 10 pounds. He wants to continue eating this way and feels that the overall benefit of continuing on an anti-inflammatory diet is worth it. His latest labs showed that his prostate number did not increase.
