Maintaining good oral hygiene goes beyond having a healthy smile; it plays a crucial role in overall health and well-being. The mouth is the gateway to our body, and a balanced oral microbiome can significantly impact various body systems, like the digestive and lymphatic systems. 

The connection between oral health and gut health is profound. The mouth serves as the starting point of the digestive system, and an imbalance in the oral microbiome can influence the gut. Excess harmful bacteria from the mouth can travel to the gut, contributing to conditions like leaky gut, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Poor oral hygiene has been linked to systemic health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even respiratory infections. Chronic inflammation or dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria) in the mouth can trigger an immune response that affects the entire body.

Because of the link between oral health and the entire body, practicing proper oral hygiene is essential for overall wellness.

Here are oral hygiene some tips:

  1. Oil Pulling
    • An ancient Ayurvedic practice; swish 2 teaspoons of oil (typically organic coconut or sesame) in the mouth for about 15 minutes.
    • This practice helps reduce harmful bacteria, improve gum health, and cleanse the mouth.
    • Studies suggest that oil pulling can decrease the number of harmful bacteria, thus lowering the risk of them traveling to the gut. This is more gentle on the good bacteria in the mouth compared to strong mouthwashes that have been linked to high blood pressure.
    • Tip: do this after brushing and spit the oil out in a trashcan. We don’t want clogged drains!
  2. Tongue scraping
    • Removes bacteria, food debris, and dead cells from the tongue’s surface.
    • This simple daily habit after brushing the teeth can significantly reduce the bacterial load in the mouth, freshen your breath, and improve taste perception.
    • By keeping the tongue clean, you reduce the chances of harmful bacteria affecting your well-being.
  3. Hydroxyapatite
    • A naturally occurring mineral, is gaining popularity as an effective alternative to fluoride in toothpaste.
    • It helps to remineralize tooth enamel, reduce sensitivity, and prevent cavities.
    • Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite is non-toxic and biocompatible, making it a safer choice for maintaining oral health with better results than fluoride. 

Adopting these holistic oral hygiene practices can lead to a healthier mouth and a healthier body!
