“Leaky gut,” or intestinal permeability, is a condition that occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes compromised.
The small intestine is lined with a thin layer of cells that create tight junctions, which act like gatekeepers to allow the absorption of nutrients while blocking the entry of potentially harmful molecules. Picture these tight junctions as gates; when they malfunction, they can open too wide, allowing unwanted visitors, such as toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles, to pass through.
