What’s Primary Food, Anyway?

In health coaching, we define primary food as the non-food aspects of your life that nourish you on a soul level and secondary food as the nourishment that goes on your plate. 

Primary food(s) are the areas that truly fuel your happiness, engagement, and overall well-being. They serve as the foundation upon which your dietary choices are built.

Here are some examples: 

  • Relationships: Do you feel connected and supported?
  • Career: Are you fulfilled and engaged in your work?
  • Spirituality: Do you have a sense of purpose and connection to something larger than yourself?
  • Physical Activity: Are you moving your body in ways that bring you joy?
  • Creativity: Are you expressing yourself and engaging in activities that ignite your passion?

Why Primary Food Matters More Than You Think

When people start a health coaching program, they often expect to start with a complete dietary overhaul — complete with elimination diets and caloric restrictions, believing that suffering will lead to a goal weight or an improved biomarker.

As board-certified health coaches, we know that when someone is fulfilled in the areas of life we call primary food, they experience more happiness, fulfillment, and appreciation, leading them to make more informed, healthy choices on their plate more often.  

In our coaching sessions, we use tools and techniques to assess your primary food areas and help you see the big picture to identify where you might be lacking. It’s not uncommon for clients to have an “aha” moment during the first meeting. 

From there, we work together to determine the areas that are the most ready for you to take action and develop a plan to help.  There can be some trial and error, however, because the coaching process is inherently client-centered, the steps we take tend to be both relevant to your life and realistic to your goals. 

In short, they work!  Clients notice the ripple effect quickly of how fulfillment in one area of their life positively impacts another and the expectation of suffering for their health lessens dramatically.  This often results in clients being shocked at how much joy the process of becoming healthy actually can be.
